Chosen by: Kathleen Bartels, Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

“The Vancouver Art Gallery’s relationship with Jeff Wall goes back to 1970, when his work was exhibited here for the first time in the landmark exhibition 955,000.  In 1990, the Gallery had the privilege of organizing the first large-scale solo exhibition of his back-lit transparencies and, in 2008, again showcased a selection of his works from our holdings in Jeff Wall: Vancouver Art Gallery Collection.  I’m very proud that the Gallery now houses the largest public collection of Jeff’s work in the world, which is very fitting, since he continues to maintain his home and make his art here in Vancouver.  Jeff Wall is one of the most imaginative, intelligent and accomplished artists working today.  This work, The Pine on the Corner, speaks so brilliantly and eloquently to his practice and has long been a personal favourite.”
