Robert Frank

Chosen by: Fred Herzog, Artist

“This photograph was taken very early in Robert Frank’s career as a photo realist, yet much I have learned about Frank’s work is already present in this single photograph. The photograph shows a moment in the life of this street in the financial district. The structure of the stage set and the image of a man in that location must have been clearly visualized in Frank’s mind.

When the opportunity to take that shot appeared, Frank had one-half second to make up his mind, compose the photograph and release the shutter.

This photograph could not have been taken by someone who had not studied the significance of this setting, its impact on the lifestyle of the British and the determination of the actors in the scene to leave their mark on the financial history of Britain, not to mention financial rewards for themselves.

The seriousness of the facial expression, the spotless uniform, and the presence of a self-important posture bespeak this claim.”
