Lectures and Talks

Artist Talk: Stephanie Dinkins

Tue Oct 8, 2019 | 7 PM

Courtroom 302

Join transmedia artist Stephanie Dinkins for a conversation about her artificial-intelligence (AI), voice-interactive project, Not The Only One (N’TOO). Prior to her talk, experience the experimental AI storyteller from 5 PM onwards in Courtroom 301.

Not The Only One (N’TOO) tells the multi-generational story of an African American family. The device is designed and trained to respond to its audience using data supplied from extensive interviews with three generations of women from one family, but the narrative is told from the first-person perspective of the AI. Over time, user input, or discussion, influences the device’s storytelling abilities as the AI’s database of available vocabulary and conversation topics grows and evolves with each interaction.

About the Artist

Stephanie Dinkins is a transdisciplinary artist who creates platforms for dialogue about artificial intelligence as it intersects race, gender and our future histories. Her art employs lens-based practices, the manipulation of space and technology to grapple with notions of consciousness, agency, perception and social equity. She is particularly driven to work with communities of colour to develop AI literacy and co-create more inclusive, equitable artificial intelligence. Dinkins’s artwork is exhibited internationally at a broad spectrum of community, private and institutional venues, including the Seattle Art Fair, WA; International Center of Photography, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art Dunaujvaros, Hungary; and more. She was recently featured in the New York Times as an AI influencer, and Apple Inc recognized Dinkins’ research and community-centered efforts by featuring her as a local hero in their “Behind the Mac” ad campaign Brooklyn, NY edition).
