Join us for a conversation convened by Simranpreet Anand with Harleen Kaur and Gabrielle Moser about Canadian Sikh identity and the misidentification as it is seen in art.

Anand will speak to her works currently on view in the exhibition Vancouver Special: Disorientations and Echo: ਦਸਤਾਰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣ ਲਈ ਬਲੂਪ੍ਰਿੰਟ (Blueprints for Tying a Dastaar) (2021). Kaur will engage with Anand’s work as it relates to historical and contemporary issues in the North American Sikh diaspora. Moser will expand the discussion through the lens of photographic histories and cyanotype processes used in the work.

This conversation will be introduced by Kulvinder Lehal from the Vancouver Art Gallery and will be delivered in both Punjabi and English language through simultaneous interpretation. Because the work and the discussion stemming from it draw from and relate back to Sikh- and Punjabi-speaking communities in the Canadian diaspora, it is important to offer this programming in Punjabi.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Simranpreet Anand is an artist, curator and cultural worker creating and working on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples (Vancouver). Her art practice interrogates the so-called neutral audience in multicultural society. To accomplish this, she uses materials —particularly textiles, language, performative gestures, and photographs—that resonate beyond the typical art gallery context. Anand’s works are meant for multiple audiences with different frames of cultural and/or artistic reference. Her practice is informed by familial and community histories, often engaging materials and concepts drawn from the histories of Punjab and the Punjabi diaspora and the ways in which they have been disrupted by colonialism and forced migration. The reclamation of cultural practice in her work interrogates colonial theft, cultural propaganda and forces of global capitalism. www.simranpreetanand.com

Harleen Kaur is a community organizer, educator and scholar. A Sociology PhD candidate at UCLA, she studies the intersection of race-making, state-making and collective memory through the Sikh diaspora’s quest for belonging. Her passion project is utilizing Sikhi’s radical notions of humanity as a driver for higher community consciousness rooted in an intersectional, anti-oppression framework. Kaur carries out this passion primarily through the creation of youth-centered Sikh community education spaces that centre accessibility and praxis in learning critical race theory and liberation frameworks. Much of Kaur’s inspiration, voice and vision was cultivated during her year as a Bonderman Fellow, when she backpacked solo through fifteen countries to better develop a global framework for liberation and sovereignty. Kaur holds an MA in Sociology from UCLA and a BA in English from the University of Michigan.

Gabrielle Moser is an art historian, writer and independent curator. She is the author of Projecting Citizenship: Photography and Belonging in the British Empire (Penn State University Press, 2019). A founding member of EMILIA-AMALIA, she is an Assistant Professor of Aesthetics and Art Education in the Faculty of Education at York University in Toronto, Canada.
