Artist Talk: Ghislain Brown-Kossi
Fri May 17, 2024 | 5:30 PM
Room 4East
“My aim is to interact and communicate with all people, to stir curiosity and encourage deeper investigation into our connectedness. I want people to look, to discover for themselves, to communicate and feel towards one another.” —Ghislain Brown-Kossi
Join us for an artist talk with Ghislain Brown-Kossi, who is represented by the Gallery’s Art Rental & Sales Program.
Brown-Kossi describes his artistic practice as “archaeological pop art.” Much of his work involves researching the histories of symbols that influence our daily lives. Some of the symbols he uses date back to the prehistoric period, while others have roots in African languages that pre-date Latin. Some are universal, like the spiral, and others are omnipresent in our culture today, found in advertising globally. Brown-Kossi hopes his work will give audiences a new understanding of civilizations past and remind us of these symbols’ ancient origins.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition OF & ABOUT POSTERS: THE LAWRENCE WEINER POSTER ARCHIVE (1965–2021) AT THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY, this conversation will explore Brown-Kossi’s work in juxtaposition with Lawrence Weiner’s.
This talk will also spotlight a selection of artists who work with text and language in a variety of ways.
Free for Gallery Members or with Gallery admission. Registration is required.
