Drexciya Baby: A Subaqueous Stabilization
Step into an immersive portal where movement and sound merge in a hypnotic underwater world.
Inspired by the lush and evocative works of Firelei Báez, this transformative embodiment practice will take place within the grotto-like installation at the heart of the exhibition, A Drexcyen Chronocommons (To win the war you fought it sideways).
Led by artist Courtenay Mayes, participants will be guided through fluid, meditative movements, grounding their attention within the body. As the session progresses, a resonant guided soundbath of soft chimes, deep vibrations and undulating tonal waves will wash over the space, creating an otherworldly connection to the watery depths and encouraging reflection on the emotions and narratives evoked by Báez’s work.
In this sound bath experience, the boundaries between art, body and the imagination will dissolve, offering a transformational deep dive into somatic intelligence and the adaptive unconscious, inviting participants to connect deeply with the themes of identity, resilience and transformation present in Báez’s art.
This event is free and open to the public. Capacity is very limited. Registration is required.
Thank you for your interest in this event, but it has now reached capacity.
This event is being presented as part of the Gallery’s Celebrating Black Futures programming. Find out more »
