Jin-me Yoon: About Time
October 15, 2022 - March 5, 2023
About Time presents Vancouver artist Jin-me Yoon’s significant artwork of the last decade. Frequently combining photography, video and installation, Yoon’s recent work is distinguished by a poetic, cinematic aesthetic—one that is deeply contemplative and undergirded by an examination of our position in the world as it is reflected in and shaped by ideas of history and memory, land and ocean.
Through layered works, the artist explores Korean diasporic experience as impacted by entwining vestiges of colonialism, imperialism and militarism. The result is a politicized poetics contemplating what it means to be a part of an interconnected world during a time of accelerated climate crisis while living on the unceded, ancestral lands of Indigenous Peoples.
The exhibition dispenses with a chronological approach to Yoon’s artistic trajectory, instead reflecting on her ongoing prioritization of the constellation of relations between people and places across time and space.
Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery as an initiative of the Institute of Asian Art and curated by Diana Freundl, Interim Chief Curator / Associate Director
